Settings for OS X E-mail

System Preferences:

Open up "System Preferences" from the dock and open "Internet."

Please use the below screen shot for clarification.

Internet:

Make sure you are under the "Email" tab. If not, click on the email tab.

Set "Default Email Reader"... The Email Program You Wish to Use
Enter "Email Address... userID@syracuse.net
Enter "Incoming Mail Server"... mail.syracuse.net
Select "POP" for "Account Type"
Enter "Users Account ID"... userID
Enter "Password"... Your Password
Enter "Outgoing Mail Server"... mail.syracuse.net

OSX Mail:

Open up "Mail" from the dock and go to MAIL then PREFERENCES. A similar window as shown below will open.

Select your Syracuse.net email account under description and then click EDIT off to the right.

The following new window will open up. Your screen should already look something like the screen shot below. All you have to do now is click and check off USE AUTHENTICATION WHEN SENDING MAIL and fill in:

SMTP User... userID
SMTP Password... Your Password

Now, click on the ACCOUNT OPTIONS tab...your screen should look like the one below. Make sure DELETE MESSAGES ON SERVER AFTER DOWNLOADING is checked. If it is not checked, your mailbox on the mail server will fill up and once it fills up all other incoming email will get "bounced back" to the sender.

Click OK


Using a Mac.com Account:

Open up "Mail" from the dock and go to MAIL then PREFERENCES. A similar window as shown below will open.

Click on CREATE ACCOUNT.

Enter in the following information:
Account Type... Mac.com Account
Description... Whatever you wish to call this profile
Email Address... YourUserID@mac.com address
Full Name... Your Real Name
Host Name... mail.mac.com
User Name... Your mac.com userID
Password... Your mac.com password
SMTP Host... mail.syracuse.net

CHECK OFF USE AUTHENTICATION WHEN SENDING MAIL
SMTP User... Your Syracuse.Net userID
SMTP Password... Your Syracuse.Net Password
